Table of Contents
Introduction
The main toolbar in Construct allows users to perform various functions relating to the configuration of the program window, saving and sharing jobs, and accessing help.
Features
Feature on the Main Toolbar | Most Commonly Used Drop-Down Menu Options | Actions Performed |
File |
Database > Backup
|
The content and structure of the Workspace may be backed up and restored to guard against catastrophic loss and corruption or to allow users of Construct to share their content. It is highly recommended that users create a content backup often. Construct automatically performs a backup when the program is updated. The backup can be used to restore jobs if users switch computers or have data loss. A Construct backup saves as a .VCB (Construct Backup) file. |
Database > Restore |
Restoring a Construct backup restores all jobs and connections that were present at the time of the backup. |
|
Print Preview |
View a preview of what the job looks like, including the job framework and the underlying functionality (e.g., connection names/location, node specifics, notes, output names and locations). From the Print Option, you may also choose to save as a PDF or other formats or directly print. |

Show/Hide Grid |
Users can select a background grid to appear within their job workspace. Use this button to show or hide the grid in the Job Workspace. By default, the grid is hidden. To show the grid, press the button. When selected, the grid pattern appears in the Job Workspace. |
Snap Moved Nodes to Grid | Force new or dragged nodes to fall onto the grid. |
|
Align All Nodes to Grid | Move all existing nodes onto the grid. This button is only functional when the Snapped Moved Nodes to Grid is off when nodes are dropped onto the Job Workspace. |
|
Grow Workspace Area |
The Job Workspace area can be increased to allow for more space to be added after the zoom feature has been decreased to 25%. |
|
Docked |
With the exception of the Workspace tab, tabs may be reordered in the program or even undocked from Construct to float as a separate window. To do this, select the tab then click and drag it to a new location. The tab will be removed from the list and a free-floating window of the same name and contents will appear on the screen. To dock a floating Construct window, select the frame then on its copy of the menu, click View > Docked. The free-floating frame will disappear and a tab of the same name and contents will appear in the program window. |

Job
|
Export Job
|
The importing process can be done either in the Workspace tab by selecting Job from the main menu, or by right-clicking in the location in your job list you want the file to be placed and selecting Export Job. This will give you the choice of saving the job without its data sources (.vcj) or containing the jobs data sources saved as .csv file (.vcpk). This second option is called packaging a job. Once the job is saved in the file format you choose, you can treat the job as any other normal file on your computer. For example as an email attachment or a file to be placed on a thumb drive.
|
Import Job
|
This process can be done either in the Workspace tab, or the Job tab from the main toolbar option Job, or by right-clicking anywhere in the job list on the Workspace tab and selecting Import Job from the menu. Each of these options will open a file browser where you can select the file that was saved in the Export process (see above).

Tools | Options > Display |
The Display Options allow you to customize your user interface. Among the many customization options are the ability to change your general theme, color scheme, and the displayed units of measurement. Additionally, you can decide to display your row/record counts within your job in a different format; and whether you want commas or simple shorthand. The default zoom (the size of the visual workspace) can be set larger or smaller. Lastly, you are able to choose between the classic set of node icons, or the modern icons. You also have the option to customize the nodes that are visible to you within your job. Selecting the boxes under Nodes Displayed in Task Panel allows you to choose which nodes display in your workspace. |
Options > Recovery |
The Recovery feature is set up to auto-save your progress within your jobs. This gives you the ability to recover work that may be lost during the creation process. The Recovery tab allows you to customize the frequency in which the data will be ‘auto-saved.’ | |
Options > General |
Within the General Options tab, you are able to customize the sample size settings within Construct. These settings include the default sample size shown when viewing data outputs, and the sample sizes set to run when you attempt to preview data within your job. Within this tab, you are able to change where your Temp Output file is saved. If you prefer that to be somewhere other than the default of your C drive Temp Folder, you can follow the ellipsis and navigate to the location of your choice. |
